Geoff Johns got his start at DC Comics with a series called Stars and S.T.R.I.P.E.; now, he will be producing a Stargirl live action series for the DC Universe service which already boasts Titans, Swamp Thing, and a Doom Patrol series in its lineup. The announcement came today in a Spotlight panel at Comic-Con.

“Obviously, Stargirl was first character I created for DC,” Johns told Deadline. “Most important, Courtney Whitmore was inspired by my sister who passed away,” he added. “To have an opportunity to tell a story celebrating this superhero was literally the first thing I wanted to do because it is so personal to me. Also, a character that speaks to being young, to a legacy and to pushing forward seems so important to me nowadays.”

Here’s what the DC press release had to say:

STARGIRL follows High School sophomore Courtney Whitmore who inspires an unlikely group of young heroes to stop the villains of the past. This new DC Universe series reimagines Stargirl and the very first superhero team, the Justice Society of America, in a fun, exciting and unpredictable series premiering in 2019, produced by Warner Bros. Television, Mad Ghost Productions and Berlanti Productions.

Stargirl made her first appearance on television in the Smallville episode “Absolute Justice” penned by Johns. She also appeared in DC’s Legends of Tomorrow Season 2 as a member of the classic Justice Society. The current plan sounds like 13 episodes for Season 1. Stay tuned for more details as they become available – as with all of these DC announcements, we do have a @StargirlTV Twitter feed!
